THE STUDIO
Metarc was founded by John Sellekaers in Brussels, Belgium, in 1998 and is currently located in Montreal, Canada. Most of our regular clients are based in North America and Europe. We work exclusively by mail/email and FTP. WHAT IS A MASTERING? It's the "art and science" of assembling songs into a cohesive album. The audio mastering is the last step before manufacturing your project (an album, a compilation) to a CD, a DVD or a vinyl; it ensures that the material is optimized for its final medium. A mastering session includes: • Bit/sample rate conversion (if required) We can also remove clicks, pops, hisses, or any interfering noise, do some edits (to remove, add, mix, or rearrange some parts of the tracks), add effects (reverb...) See the Wikipedia entry for additional information. A MASTERING SESSION, 1. Contact us as soon as possible (even if the production of your album is not completed) to arrange a session and a price. 2. When your project is ready (recorded and mixed), prepare the material for the mastering session: • If you plan to send your project by mail, burn a data CD-R, DVD-R or DVD+R (WAV or AIFF files), or an audio CD-R. • If you prefer to upload it on our FTP server, prepare a folder containing all your tracks in WAV or AIFF format. You can ZIP or RAR them; we also accept lossless compression formats such as FLAC, Monkeys Audio, OptimFrog, The True Audio etc. Preferred format: WAV or AIFF, at 44.100Hz, 16 or 24-bit. We can also work with DAT for an additional charge. MP3 files, Minidiscs (or any other compressed format) are not recommended. Add a clear track-listing for the final product (the order of the songs), and your specific instructions (silences between tracks, fades, noises to remove, EQ preferences etc.) 3. Send it by mail or FTP. Make sure to clearly label everything and to include your name, email, phone number and address. 4. We work on your project. We might email or call you if there's any problem or question. As soon as the master is ready, we contact you. The payment should be arranged at this stage. 5. We deliver the master by mail or FTP, with the invoice. • By mail: two replication-ready CD-R (Red Book), with corresponding PQ log sheet. They are identical, one should be kept as listening copy. • By FTP: a CD image or individual tracks (exact format to be decided depending of your needs). You'll have to download and burn the CD. Make sure you have the necessary software to do this. 6. When you receive the master CD, listen to it carefully. If there's anything you'd like to change, let us know; we keep a backup and modifications are always possible. 7. You can then send the master CD to the pressing plant of your choice... |
